For the first time since 2017, the Lynx are back in the Finals after beating the Sun in the semifinals of the 2024 WNBA Playoffs.

The Lynx will play last year's runner-up, the Liberty, in the Finals that will begin Thursday night in Brooklyn. It's a matchup between the two best teams in the WNBA this season. New York finished the regular season with a league-best 32-8 record. The Lynx weren't far behind with a 30-10 record.

It will be a historic Finals no matter the outcome. Either the Liberty will win their first title in franchise history or the Lynx will break a tie for the most championships in league history.

Here's everything you need to know about the Lynx's previous trips to the Finals.

How many championships do the Lynx have?

The Lynx are one of the winningest franchises in WNBA history. The organization has four titles, which is tied with the Comets and Storm for the most in the league. Additionally, all four championships have come since 2011, while no other team has more than two in that span.

Not only do the Lynx have much WNBA success, but they have more championships than the Vikings, Twins, Timberwolves and Wild have combined.

Lynx Finals history

The Lynx will be playing in their seventh WNBA Finals, the most by any team in league history. The Liberty are no strangers to the Finals either, but it'll mark the first matchup between the two teams on the WNBA's biggest stage.

New York has played in five WNBA Finals, tied for the second-most, but the team is 0-5 in those appearances.

Between 2011-17, the only season that the Lynx didn't make the Finals was 2014 when they lost in the conference finals.

Year Opponent Result
2011 Atlanta Dream W, 3-0
2012 Indiana Fever L, 3-1
2013 Atlanta Dream W, 3-0
2015 Indiana Fever W, 3-2
2016 Los Angeles Sparks L, 3-2
2017 Los Angeles Sparks W, 3-2

Minnesota hired head coach Cheryl Reeve in 2010, and she has led the team ever since. Before Reeve, the Lynx made the playoffs twice in 11 seasons, while the team has been in the playoffs in 13 of Reeve's 15 seasons.

Additionally, much of Minnesota's success happened after the team drafted star guard Maya Moore in 2011. Moore immediately led the team to a title as a rookie, then helped the Lynx win three more before her final season in 2018. Moore played eight years in the WNBA, averaging 18.4 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists in her career, winning one MVP award.

This will be Minnesota's first WNBA Finals appearance without Moore on the roster.

WNBA Finals wins by franchise

The Storm, Lynx and Comets each have four WNBA championships, tying them for the most in the league. If the Lynx defeat the Liberty in 2024, they will own the record themselves.

This WNBA Finals will be the matchup between the two teams with the most Finals appearances, but only Minnesota has seen success in those series.
