UFC 302 takes place Saturday night from Newark. If necessary, the lightweight title between Islam Makhachev (25-1 MMA) and Dustin Poirier (30-8, 1 NC MMA) will be contested across five rounds.

The fight is Makhachev's third title defense as he puts his 13-fight unbeaten streak on the line. Meanwhile, for Poirier, it is his third attempt at obtaining lightweight gold, having previously lost to ex-champions to Charles Oliveira and Khabib Nurmagomedov is his first two opportunities. Despite being 2-2 across his last four outings, Poirier did enough to earn a title shot by virtue of a victory against Benoit Saint-Denis in March, coupled with Max Holloway's upset against Justin Gaethje at UFC 300.

Elsewhere, the co-main event features a highly anticipated middleweight bout between Sean Strickland and Paulo Costa. Both men look to move one step closer to a title shot. Strickland lost his middleweight title in January, while Costa last sniffed a title fight a few years ago.

The 12-fight card features a variety of veterans and prospects, making for an exciting pay-per-view offering to begin the month of June.
