Barcelona's 16-year-old Lamine Yamal was named in Spain's 26-man squad for Euro 2024 by head coach Luis de la Fuente.

The teenager's Barcelona teammate Pedri was also included alongside fellow Blaugrana stars Fermin Lopez and Ferran Torres, but 17-year-old defender Pau Cubarsi and Gavi missed out through injury.

Real Madrid's Nacho and Real Betis' Ayoze Perez were also in the squad but Marco Asensio was omitted, as De la Fuente opted for a mix of young talent and experienced stars in his attempt to guide La Roja to a first European title since their back-to-back successes of 2008 and 2012.

Spain, who were drawn in Group B, will play Croatia, Italy, and Albania.

Spain Euro 2024 squad and player roster

Barcelona's rising star Lamine Yamal is already arguably the most important player for his country given the threat he provides through direct runs and dribbles on the wing.

Otherwise, Spain's power lies in their midfield, as has become tradition. With Manchester City star Rodri, Paris Saint-Germain's Fabian Ruiz, and Barcelona duo Pedri and Fermin Lopez, La Roja boast an enviable group of ball-playing central options. Dominance of possession in the majority of matches seems a given.

There is a suspect nature about their defensive options. Nacho and Dani Carvajal enjoyed tremendous seasons with Real Madrid, but they, along with Sevilla veteran Jesus Navas, may find it difficult to sustain their form after long and gruelling club campaigns. Dani Vivian is largely untested at this level, and Aymeric Laporte has become accustomed to the slower pace of the Saudi Pro League.

How many players are in Euro 2024 squads?

On May 3, 2024, UEFA's executive committee confirmed national teams would be able to name 26 players in their Euro 2024 squads.

This was the number allowed due to the impact of COVID-19 upon Euro 2020, while the FIFA World Cup taking place in the middle of the 2022/23 European season meant larger squads were also permitted.

UEFA intended to revert to a 23-man limit for Euro 2024 but the national competitions committee voting in favor of 26-man squads forced a rethink.

Teams had to confirm their preliminary squads by May 21 and submit final squad lists to UEFA by June 7.

Replacements can be made on the grounds of illness or injury up until June 13, the day before the tournament starts.

Once Euro 2024 begins, teams must find solutions from within their 26-man squads.
