Every season in the Premier League, three teams are promoted to England's top flight, two automatically and one via the play-offs from the Championship.
For those teams, safety from relegation during their first season at that level is the main aim and even then, many teams fail.
But throughout the history of the competition, a number of clubs have been promoted and have then gone on to achieve considerable success in terms of a high finishing position in the league.
In this article, The Sporting News take a look at which club currently holds the record for best Premier League finish after promotion and take a further look at the top five.

What's the best Premier League finish after promotion?
Newcastle United - 3rd (1993/94)
Newcastle United currently hold the record for best finish following promotion in Premier League history.
After winning the old Division One back in 1992/93, the Magpies then took England's top-flight by storm a season later under the guidance of manager Kevin Keegan to finish in 3rd spot behind champions Manchester United and second-placed Blackburn Rovers.
Winning 23of their 42 league matches, the Toon qualified for the UEFA Cup thanks to their third-placed finish which was largely built on the back of striker Andy Cole. Throughout the season he hit 34 goals which saw him win the Golden Boot and also the PFA Young Player of the Year award.
Nottingham Forest also managed to finish third after promotion a season later during the 1994/95 Premier League campaign but Newcastle managed to better their goal difference by 12 (+41 to +29).
