Brereton Diaz has returned to Villarreal for pre-season training after completing a loan spell at Sheffield United, where he made a notable impact despite the team's relegation from the Premier League.

The 25-year-old forward scored six goals and provided one assist in 16 appearances during his time at Bramall Lane.

However, his future at Villarreal appears uncertain as he finds himself lower in the hierarchy at El Madrigal. With Gerard Moreno and Alexander Sorloth ahead of him as central strikers, along with left-winger Arnaut Danjuma also competing for playing time, Brereton Díaz may struggle for opportunities.

As a result, the forward is eager to secure a move back to the Premier League. Southampton, who have long admired him and previously attempted to sign him before his transfers to both Villarreal and Sheffield United, are are now in advanced talks to bring him back to England, according to The Athletic.

Saints boss Russell Martin wants more attacking options at his disposal for the start of the new Premier League campaign after losing Che Adams to Torino on a free transfer earlier this week.

Brereton Diaz's versatility means he can play anywhere across the front line and his Premier League experience makes him a vital addition to his plans.
