Artistic swimming is returning to Paris with a brand-new scoring system, a new structure, and the guarantee of a new gold medalist.
The sport, previously known as synchronized swimming, arrived at the Tokyo Olympics with a new name and now features an acrobatic routine. Conversely, the duet competition now only includes a final instead of a preliminary free routine. Scoring is different as well, now requiring elements with fixed degrees of difficulty.
Russia has been dominant in the event, winning gold in every team and duet event since 1996 but won't participate in Paris due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. As a result, the field is wide open.
The United States qualified in artistic swimming for the first time since 2008. Anita Alvarez is competing in her third Olympic games and is confident coming into Paris.
Other U.S. swimmers joining Alvarez include Jaime Czarkowski and Megumi Field. The U.S. hasn't won a medal in artistic swimming since 1984, but that could all change in Paris.
