Team USA saw an opportunity after Usain Bolt retired after 2016, as the Jamaican legend's absence opened up the 100-meter and 200-meter races for the rest of the field. Despite some strong performances in Tokyo, the Americans couldn't claim gold.

Fred Kerley nearly managed gold in the 100-meter, instead settling for silver, while three U.S. sprinters earned a top-four finish in the 200-meter. They just couldn't capture the top spot, which was snagged by Canada's Andre De Grasse.

One of those top-four finishers was Noah Lyles. Lyles earned bronze in Tokyo, picking up the first Olympic medal of his career. It's fair to say his sights are set much higher this year.

Lyles is hoping to claim gold in both the 100-meter and 200-meter, aiming to give the U.S. a boost as it fights to make up a gold medal deficit.

Here's a look at where Lyles' medal chase stands so far.
