The wait is over, as the Sharks win the 2024 NHL Draft Lottery and the right to draft Macklin Celebrini.

The No. 1 overall pick is a massive get for San Jose, as the franchise has missed the playoffs in five consecutive seasons. Celebrini, a 17-year-old freshman at Boston University, could be a turning point for the team if the Sharks select him.

The Blackhawks earned the No. 2 pick one year after selecting Connor Bedard first overall. The Ducks will select third. This year's draft lottery marked the first time since 2010 that the draft order did not change from the expected order.

The NHL lottery draws for each of the top two picks to determine which teams land the selections. The Sharks won the No. 1 pick on the first draw, then won the No. 2 pick twice in a row. There were a total of four draws, and the NHL has never had a redraw before.

Celebrini is regarded as the consensus No. 1 overall pick. The Boston University forward became just the fourth freshman to take home the Hobey Baker as the best player in college hockey. While nothing is official until the pick is in, Celebrini is expected to be the first Hobey Baker winner to go first in the NHL Draft.

Outside of Celebrini, this draft class has a plethora of high-end defensemen, as well as some other skilled forwards expected to go early in the first round.

NHL Draft Lottery No. 1 pick odds

The NHL used a draft lottery system to determine who gets the first selection on draft day. A club's final position in the standings correlates to a certain percentage that it has to land the No. 1 pick in the draft lottery.

Since teams can only move up as many as 10 spots in a draft, there are only 11 teams that have a chance at the first overall pick. Teams that finished from Nos. 12-16 can win the lottery and move up to a top spot, but it won't be further than 10 places up.

The Sharks finished with the worst record in the NHL this season, so they have the highest odds of landing the No. 1 pick in the draft. While San Jose technically has just an 18.5% chance based on its finish, the Sharks also get the No. 1 pick if any of the teams slotted from Nos. 12-16 win the lottery. So their number is really at 25.5%.

Here were those chances, based on where teams finished in the 2023-24 regular season.

Team Chance at No. 1 pick
San Jose Sharks 25.5%
Chicago Blackhawks 13.5%
Anaheim Ducks 11.5%
Columbus Blue Jackets 9.5%
Montreal Canadiens 8.5%
Utah (formerly Arizona Coyotes)  7.5%
Ottawa Senators 6.5%
Seattle Kraken 6.0%
Calgary Flames 5.0%
New Jersey Devils 3.5%
Buffalo Sabres 3.0%
Philadelphia Flyers 2.5%
Minnesota Wild 2.0%
Pittsburgh Penguins* 1.5%
Detroit Red Wings 0.5%
St. Louis Blues 0.5%

*If the Penguins' 2024 1st-round pick becomes a top-10 pick as a result of the Draft Lottery, Pittsburgh will have the option to transfer its 2025 1st-round pick to San Jose instead of its 2024 1st-round pick. This is a result of the Erik Karlsson trade.

How many draws are there at the 2024 NHL Draft Lottery?

The 2024 draft lottery has two draws:

  • Draw 1: To determine who will select first overall
  • Draw 2: To determine who will select second overall

Under the new lottery rules, only 11 teams have a shot at the No. 1 pick, because a club cannot climb more than 10 spots in the order. The same math applies to the No. 2 drawing, so only 12 teams have a chance at that selection.

After the two drawings, the rest of the order is determined by where each team finished in the standings.
