Miami's quarterback room took another blow on Sunday.

After Tua Tagovailoa's injury against the Bills in Week 2, backup quarterback Skylar Thompson went down with an injury of his own in Week 3 vs. the Seahawks.

It's a tough situation for the Dolphins, who fell to 1-2 with their loss to Seattle on Sunday. With both Tagovailoa and Thompson injured, Miami has had to continue working down the depth chart.

The Sporting News has you covered with how long Tagovailoa could be out, the latest updates on his and Thompson's injuries and a look at Miami's current quarterback depth chart.

How long is Tua Tagovailoa out?

Tagovailoa was diagnosed with a concussion after taking a hit to the head while scrambling against Buffalo in Week 2. He eventually walked off the field under his own power.

With an extensive concussion history, there was league-wide concern for Tagovailoa's future in the NFL after the injury. However, the Dolphins recently placed him on IR, meaning he'd first be eligible to return in Week 8 vs. the Cardinals.

There are multiple steps Tagovailoa must take in the NFL's concussion protocols in order to return to the field, meaning a Week 8 return isn't a guarantee. The Dolphins likely plan on being extremely cautious with his concussion, the third diagnosed in his career.

With Tagovailoa out, the Dolphins turned toward Thompson to start in Week 3.

Skylar Thompson injury update

Taking over for Tagovailoa, Thompson was up to 107 passing yards vs. Seattle before leaving the game in the third quarter.

He took a hit from Seahawks defensive end Dre'Mont Jones and remained on the ground after, getting looked at by Miami's staff.

After eventually walking off the field, Thompson was ruled out with a "chest injury" by the Dolphins.

While speaking to reporters following the game, head coach Mike McDaniel confirmed "It was a rib injury that was pretty painful. ... We'll get a chance to look at him tomorrow."

Already down one quarterback, Miami ended Sunday's game down two. Tim Boyle took over for the Dolphins after Thompson's injury.

Dolphins QB depth chart

With Tagovailoa and Thompson's injuries, here's a look at Miami's QB depth chart. With their top two quarterbacks down, the Dolphins' options have dwindled.

Rank Player
1 Tua Tagovailoa (IR)
2 Skylar Thompson (Injured)
3 Tim Boyle
4 Tyler Huntley

No. 1: Tua Tagovailoa

When he's healthy, Tagovailoa has been one of the league's top passers. He had 4,624 passing yards in 2023.

Through his early 2024 action, Tagovailoa had 483 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions before his concussion.

No. 2: Skylar Thompson

Drafted in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft, Thompson has been a depth piece for Miami throughout his career so far.

Thompson had an opportunity to step into the starting role with Tagovailoa's injury, but with his own injury vs. the Seahawks, the Dolphins may have to move further down the depth chart in Week 4.

No. 3: Tim Boyle

Miami turned to Boyle to finish Sunday's game, and he finished 7-for-13 with 79 passing yards, no touchdowns, and no interceptions.

In six NFL seasons, Boyle has played for five teams and has four passing touchdowns compared to 12 interceptions. If Thompson can't play in Week 4, it could be either Boyle or the Dolphins' QB4 starting under center.

No. 4: Tyler Huntley

Huntley spent the previous four seasons with the Ravens and was recently signed by Miami after Tagovailoa's injury.

Experience-wise, Huntley could be Miami's strongest starting option if its top two options can't play next week. He has 1,957 passing yards, eight passing touchdowns, seven interceptions, and 509 rushing yards in 20 career games.
