Sean Payton's too-complicated play calls are already hurting another team

Former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton is back in the news for his absurdly long play calls again.

This time, Payton’s play calls went viral because Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix appeared to have some problems handling the long details from his head coach.

Nix, the 12th overall pick, has completed just 59.7 percent of his passes with four interceptions over the course of two losses.

But as Saints fans know, this is far from a new thing with Payton. There’s a famous clip of Drew Brees reciting off one of Payton’s calls from the broadcast booth and sounding like an auctioneer.

And last year, during the underwhelming campaign with the Broncos, Payton had to dial back his play calls for a veteran like Russell Wilson, too. Like last year, now Nix and the Denver offense struggle to get to the line with any sense of speed, which messes up the pacing of the offense.

For Saints fans, the last few years have arguably provided even more proof of Brees’ greatness. Either way, they are also free to focus on the fact that Klint Kubiak appears to have the current version of the Saints offense humming just fine, to put it lightly.
