Smile, Roger, you'll be on candid camera tonight.

NBC Sports told Sporting News on Thursday evening that it will show NFL commissioner Roger Goodell during the network's broadcast of the NFL regular-season opener between Chiefs and Patriots at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.

"We will show the commissioner during tonight's coverage of the game, and cover any related news appropriately," NBC spokesman Dan Masonson said.

Goodell will have to run the gauntlet of a rabidly anti-commissioner crowd of Patriots fan still enraged over his four-game suspension of Tom Brady over Deflategate last season. For example, Barstool Sports distributed 70,000 towels showing Goodell wearing a clown nose, according to Sports Illustrated.

No doubt, thousands of Patriots fans will wave their own handmade signs denouncing Goodell.

I give NBC credit for showing Goodell. It is a legit news story. The Patriots, meanwhile, will not show Goodell on their video scoreboards. The commissioner, it should be noted, will not be sitting in Pats owner Robert Kraft's luxury box.

The question now is, how much will NBC show Goodell?

Will the network show him early and then ignore him, or will it stick with the story and follow the fan protests? During NBC's "Football Night in America" pregame show, Dan Patrick noted Pats fans widely jeering Goodell as he hung out on the sideline.

NBC's counterparts at other NFL TV partner networks will be closely watching.

"I want to see Roger Goodell. I want see how people react," Tony Kornheiser of ESPN's "Pardon the Interruption" said Thursday. "I want to see people boo him for what he did to that particular team. I want to see how many times NBC puts the camera on him."
