The Philadelphia Eagles recently got some outside help to assist the offensive line during the sweltering heat of training camp.

There, they found Nick Gates, a former undrafted free agent from 2018 who will now suit up for his third team in the NFC East.

According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2, the Eagles inked Gates to a one-year deal worth $1.125 million. Per Over The Cap, the actual cap hit is just $985,000.

Gates had previously earned a two-year, $6.825 million contract extension in 2020 with the New York Giants, then earned a three-year deal with the Washington Commanders a year ago before on-field struggles.

For the Eagles, Gates is a well-known depth player while the line battles summer injuries. Mekhi Becton has received surprise first-team reps at guard and might just steal a starting job, while Tyler Steen, Lane Johnson, and Landon Dickerson have dealt with various issues that have limited their reps.

At this point, Gates should have a solid chance to prove himself over the course of practices and preseason games. Given his ability to play center and other spots, versatility could help him edge out other competition on the depth chart—and a pretty friendly contract doesn’t hurt.
