The New England Patriots are cutting down their roster from 90 to 53 players by the league's mandated deadline at 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
One of the more interesting moves was reported Tuesday afternoon, as the Patriots are releasing kicker Chad Ryland, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Ryland kicked collegiately at Eastern Michigan and Maryland in college earning Second-team All-Conference honors three times before New England drafted him in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL draft.
As a rookie, Ryland was statistically the worst kicker in football, making an abysmal 64% of his field goal attempts and 96% of his extra points.
This offseason, the Patriots brought in veteran kicker Joey Slye to compete with Ryland, and the veteran, despite missing two long field goals in New England's preseason finale against the Washington Commanders, outplayed the 24-year-old.
It will be interesting to see if another team gives Ryland a chance, or if the Patriots will try to bring him back on their practice squad for depth at the position.
