The Carolina Panthers turned in a somewhat dreadful performance to open the preseason in New England against the Patriots.

They lost 17-3 on a gloomy, rain-soaked Thursday evening, and there wasn’t much that could be taken away in terms of team positives. However, when looking at individual performances, Carolina may have a rotational cornerback playing his way into a starting role.

Lamar Jackson turned in a tremendous performance against the Patriots. He was targeted five times, coming away with two pass deflections and allowing a passer rating of just 39.6.

The Panthers did sign cornerback Dane Jackson from the Buffalo Bills this offseason, and he is currently slotted into the starting role opposite of Jaycee Horn. However, Jackson has never been a long-term full-time starter. Should Jackson continue stacking good performances, he could take that job and make it his own.

The Panthers continue preseason play this Saturday when they host the New York Jets.
