The Minnesota Vikings final 53-man roster has some intriguing battles that are about to be waged this summer.
There are a few players that stand out who could be out of a job come the end of August, including some high draft picks from general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah's first-class. The exercise of looking forward at the potential 53-man roster is good to do before training camp hits.
That is exactly what David Kenyon of Bleacher Report did by taking a look at who the best player could be cut from each team. He projected the Vikings to cut quarterback Nick Mullens.
If possible, the Vikings would probably like to keep Nick Mullens around for his knowledge. The problem is Minnesota signed Sam Darnold in free agency, drafted J.J. McCarthy and still has Jaren Hall—who realistically might not be safe as a hopeful stash on the practice squad. This is very much a Mullens vs. Hall discussion.
The idea of cutting Mullens is a fascinating one. He has a less than $2 million cap hit and played pretty well last year when he did play. The one caveat is that he threw a lot of interceptions.
He is one of the best pure backup quarterbacks in the NFL and could be a valuable trade asset. The Vikings gave up a seventh-round pick for Mullens and could easily get one in return, so cutting him might not be the smartest play for the Vikings.
