The Los Angeles Chargers have what many feel is a vastly improved team over what we saw on the field to end the 2023 season, but the one spot that remains a concern is the defensive line.
Teair Tart, recently released by the Miami Dolphins, visited with the Chargers on Wednesday. If all went well, a contract offer could be imminent. Tart got off to a good start with the Tennesee Titans after going undrafted in 2020. He spent the latter part of last season with the Houston Texans and was signed by the Dolphins this spring.
The Dolphins did not see Tart as a fit and released him on Tuesday. The Chargers have swooped in to see what they can still get out of him. Tart is 6-foot-2 and 300 pounds. He has 79 career tackles and 2.5 sacks.
The Chargers defensive line could benefit greatly from more talent. Following the first preseason game, the starters are projected to be some combination of Morgan Fox, Otito Ogbinnia, Poona Ford or Scott Matlock. Tart would provide experienced depth and could crack the starting lineup if he still has anything to offer.
Those who cover the Dolphins beat have talked about how deep the team is at defensive tackle and that perhaps laziness, something that was attached to him in Tennessee, may have contributed to his release.
Chargers also add new tight end to the roster
The Chargers have signed tight end Tucker Fisk to fill the open slot they had on the roster. He has been assigned jersey No. 44 which recently belonged to Ben Mason, who was released this week.
Fisk went undrafted in 2022 after playing at Stanford in college, one of Jim Harbaugh's previous coaching stops. He has spent the previous two seasons with the Atlanta Falcons and has one career NFL reception.
He will join a tight end position that has several options but few locks to make the roster. Outside of Will Dissly and Hayden Hurst, it's pretty wide open. Fisk will have two preseason games to make a difference and perhaps land a spot on the practice squad.
