There is only one week of National Football League action in 2024 behind us and there already has been a handful of injuries that have popped up.
The Pittsburgh Steelers unfortunately lost punter Cameron Johnston for the season after he suffered a season-ending knee injury. Pittsburgh looked to the open market to find a replacement and reportedly is signing former Chicago Bears punter Corliss Waitman, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
"The Steelers plan to sign punter Corliss Waitman, per his agent Alexa Stabler, after Cameron Johnston suffered a season-ending knee injury Sunday," Pelissero said. "It’s the third stint with Pittsburgh for Waitman, who originally signed there as an undrafted free agent in 2020."
Waitman has spent parts of two seasons in the National Football League. He played his first season in 2021 with the Steelers. He spent the 2022 season with the Denver Broncos and led the league with 96 punts.
Pittsburgh got some rough news but now the former Bear has found a new home. He signed a reserve/futures contract with the Bears ahead of the 2024 season but was waived in August. He now will get another chance in the National Football League and should have a big role with the Steelers.
It's unfortunate that Pittsburgh suffered a tough injury, but hopefully, Waitman will be able to make the most out of the opportunity. Pittsburgh will kick off Week 2 action on Sunday against the Broncos.
