Could the Minnesota Vikings sign a veteran WR?

Training camp is less than two months away from beginning for the Minnesota Vikings and there are still a lot of questions that need to be answered ahead of the 2024 season.

When you look at the roster as it's currently constructed, the quarterback position is obviously the biggest question from a long-term perspective, but Sam Darnold has the starting job right now. That isn't likely to change anytime soon, as the Vikings are taking J.J. McCarthy's development with a very patient approach.

One of the interesting positions to monitor for the Vikings is the wide receiver position. Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison are the unquestioned top two players but WR3 is up for grabs. Right now, Brandon Powell is the front runner for the position and it's primed to have a hard-fought competition.

Could the Minnesota Vikings sign Hunter Renfrow?

Could they sign a veteran receiver for the competition? The Athletic's Alec Lewis mentioned that potential in his latest piece and it's something we have discussed before: Las Vegas wide receiver Hunter Renfrow.

I am curious, however, to see what the Vikings do with their No. 3 receiver. Even if they want to use heavier personnel, third-and-long situations often require three receivers. Powell is a reliable pass-catching option, and Sherfield is a viable blocker. But I also wonder if the Vikings could explore a free-agent possibility like Hunter Renfrow, who caught 103 passes for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2021.

Renfrow was an excellent slot receiver once the Raiders selected him in the fifth round out of Clemson. Unfortunately, former head coach Josh McDaniels didn't use him much at all. It was very curious as the Raiders had signed him to a sizeable extension and he seemed to be a perfect fit for his offense. Renfrow caught 61 passes for 585 yards and two touchdowns over the last two seasons.

On Monday, I wrote about the potential of the Vikings signing UFL Offensive Player of the Year Hakeem Butler. A former fourth-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals, Butler has thrived in the spring leagues and deserves another shot to succeed in the NFL. He would be a different approach than what Renfrow represents, as they are significantly different players.

The Vikings would be smart to bring in some more veteran competition with all of the youth currently in the room and Renfrow has the experience and ability to get open the Vikings could definitely use.
