The Chargers are coming off a disappointing 5-12 season under previous coach Brandon Staley. They're counting on being much improved record-wise in the 2024 NFL season under big-name replacement Jim Harbaugh.
Harbaugh comes to Los Angeles after leading Michigan to the CFP national championship. He brings plenty of hype to the team, too, after what he accomplished in San Francisco with the 49ers, getting to Super Bowl 47.

Chargers strength of schedule
The Chargers have a favorable schedule awaiting Harbaugh in his first season back in the NFL. They are tied for the league's fifth-easiest schedule based on the 2023 combined winning percentage (.478, 138-151). They set up well for reward after falling all the way to last place in the AFC West.

Toughest tests: The Chargers need to deal with the Chiefs twice, for starters. They also play all of the NFC North, with the Bengals, Ravens, Steelers, and Browns all bringing their share of challenges. They also will hope to fare better vs. the Broncos and Raiders to dig out of the division cellar.
Biggest breaks: The Chargers have a lot of them. Getting the last-place Titans and Patriots helps, along with the Broncos and Raiders, who also have QB issues. They also draw the entire NFC South in interconference play and add a manageable, short road trip to the Cardinals.
Bottom line: The Chargers are well positioned for a big immediate turnaround under Harbaugh. Going 4-2 in the division is reachable, as is going 3-2 against their favorable NFC slate. They should also pick up at least three wins outside of the division in AFC play. That adds up to getting back to 2022 form as a wild-card contender behind the Chiefs.
