Los Angeles Chargers rookie linebacker Junior Colson has had an appendectomy that will sideline him for an undetermined amount of time.

According to head coach Jim Harbaugh, Colson's appearance on the Non-football Illness list was due to surgery following the discovery he had appendicitis. The rookie was placed on the NFI list a week ago, meaning if he had surgery around that time he is anywhere from one week to a full month away from returning.

First and foremost, it is good to hear the issue has been taken care of and that this is not a more serious multi-month issue that would sideline him for the entire preseason. Colson is in the unique position of having played in defensive coordinator Jesse Minter's defense last year at Michigan, shortening the number of live reps he would need to learn the defense.

Still, this is an unfortunate start to the career of one of the most exciting rookies the Chargers have drafted in quite some time. Wishing nothing but a quick and easy recovery for the young linebacker as he works his way back onto the field.
