The Chargers fired offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt on Monday night, the team announced.

Los Angeles is 3-5 on the season and rank 23rd in the league in scoring, averaging 19.6 points per game. Whisenhunt was the team's offensive coordinator 2016 and was in his second stint with the Chargers.

“This is not an easy decision and definitely not one that I take lightly,” head coach Anthony Lynn said in a statement. “You win as a team, and you lose as a team. It’s never about just one person. At the end of the day, however, I simply felt a change was needed at this time."

Whisenhunt had two previous head coaching positions before returning to the Chargers. He helped guide the Cardinals to the Super Bowl in 2008 but was fired after the 2012 season following three consecutive playoff misses. Whisenhunt landed an offensive coordinator role with the Chargers in 2013 and returned again in 2016 in the same role after lasting just 23 games as the Titans head coach.

Los Angeles has scored more than 20 points just twice this season in what has been an underwhelming year for the franchise. The Chargers have already lost more games (five) than all of last season (four) and would have dropped to 2-6 had Bears kicker Eddy Pineiro made his 41-yard field goal attempt as time expired Sunday.
