Urban Meyer wants nearly double the highest salary in the sport to return to coaching and take the Michigan job – which is to say the former Ohio State head coach isn’t seriously looking to lead the Wolverines.

“I’m not taking it (for $10 million),” Meyer said to Matt Leinert when asked if he’d take that salary at Michigan (h/t Michigan Diehards). “That’s what they pay me here at Big Noon.

“$25 (million)? I’m taking it.”

It’s important to note that Meyer was motioning that he wouldn’t even take it at that price point when Leinert turned to the camera and claimed he would.

The Wolverines signed Sherrone Moore to a contract only after a 31-12 Week 12 blowout at the hands of Texas; a victory the Longhorns punctuated with a mid-field flag plant at Michigan Stadium after the final whistle. Many doubt Moore’s long-term prospects at Michigan, though, with the 2024 season already going worse than Jim Harbaugh’s 15-0, national championship swan song in 2023.

Evidently, the Wolverines won’t be getting Meyer to save Michigan anytime soon.

Michigan must embrace patience under Sherrone Moore

The time to “fire” Moore was immediately following the Texas game. Although given that Moore wasn’t on a contract anyway, it would’ve been like not renewing a free trial for Michigan athletics.

Now that he’s back, the Wolverines have to embrace him. At least through the start of next season. If things aren’t working after Moore has a full offseason, cut bait and find a Meyer-esque candidate to revive the winningest team of all time’s brand.

But firing him before then would make Michigan look dysfunctional. And that could cost them top-flight coaching candidates.
