The Big 12 Conference is not slowing down when it comes to expanding its borders.

After adding eight schools over the last two seasons, two-time defending national basketball champion UConn is in talks to join the Big 12, according to a report from ESPN

From ESPN: "The talks have advanced to the point where UConn athletic director David Benedict and board chair Daniel Toscano met with Big 12 athletic directors in person in Dallas last week to make their case, sources told ESPN. The conversations centered around football funding and how UConn could be competitive upon joining the league in 2031, sources said."

The Big 12 added four teams in 2023 with BYU, Cincinnati, UCF and Houston. Four more teams come to the Big 12 in 2024 from the Pac-12 Conference with Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah.

The proposal to have UConn join the Big 12 would include a delay in football, which would not join the league until 2031 as it built up resources to be competitive in the Big 12. All other sports would join at the earliest opportunity to negotiate a way out of the 27-month waiting period for UConn to leave the Big East.
