Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire became one of the most well-respected names in Texas high school football over 20 years as an assistant coach and head coach, most notably winning three state championships at Cedar Hill High from 2003 to 2016.

That’s why it’s probably no surprise that McGuire’s top recruit in his tenure as Texas Tech’s head coach comes from Texas in five-star wide receiver Micah Hudson — a player who could lift the Red Raiders to a new level in McGuire’s third season.

Pro Football Focus listed Hudson at No. 4 on its list of the Top Freshman Wide Receiver Recruits in the Country headed into 2024.

Hudson, 6-foot and 195 pounds, played for Lake Belton High and is the highest-rated recruit to come to Texas Tech under McGuire Hudson had back-to-back seasons over 1,000 receiving yards in 2022 and 2023, capping his career with 70 receptions for 1,353 yards and 18 touchdowns as a senior.

"I’ve been lucky to coach some absolutely freaky athletic individuals and I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anyone like Micah,” McGuire told TexasTech.com</a> after Hudson signed. He’s so explosive, has phenomenal hands, and loves football as much as anyone I’ve been around.”

McGuire led the Red Raiders to back-to-back winning seasons and back-to-back bowl wins in his first two seasons. Texas Tech opens the season on Aug. 31 at home against Abilene Christian.
