College football's first top-10 matchup of the 2024 season wasn't exactly close.
Despite No. 3 Texas and No. 10 Michigan's matchup drawing pregame hype, Saturday's game was all Longhorns as they coasted to a 31-12 win against the defending national champions.
Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers tossed three touchdowns in the game, shining in a big-time matchup to boost his early-season Heisman Trophy case.
Saturday marked the first-ever regular season matchup between the two famed programs, with their only other meeting coming in the 2005 Rose Bowl. While the stakes in this non-conference game might not have been as high in a new 12-team playoff era as they would've been with a four-team playoff, Texas still asserted itself as arguably the country's best team with a dominant top-10 victory now on its résumé.
The Wolverines' defense mostly held strong in the first quarter, but eventually Ewers broke through. The Longhorns took a 7-0 lead into the second quarter after Ewers hit tight end Gunnar Helm for a 21-yard score, and they never looked back.
Texas did most of its scoring in that second quarter, holding a 24-3 lead at halftime. Ewers topped it off with one last touchdown to Jaydon Blue in the third frame, and Texas' defense did the rest, forcing three turnovers throughout the game.
Wolverines senior quarterback Davis Warren finished with 204 passing yards, a touchdown and two interceptions after 118 passing yards with a touchdown and an interception in Week 1. Helm led the Longhorns' receiving corps with seven catches for 98 yards and a touchdown.
After Michigan dropped a spot in the AP Poll following a 30-10 win over Fresno State last week, the program now claims a 1-1 record heading into Week 3. The Wolverines' 23-game home win streak was snapped with the loss.
