The 12-team College Football Playoff format debuts this fall, and for Penn State, it means one step closer to a playoff run. But first up is West Virginia.
The Nittany Lions handled their local rivals last year, winning 38-15 at home, but head to Morgantown this season to complete the home-and-away series. The programs, who otherwise haven't faced off in over 30 years, once again begin their seasons against each other.
It's a big year for Penn State. It went 11-2 last year, losing only to Ohio State and Michigan, a feat some would hold high, but that wasn't enough for the program. It's chasing a spot in the playoffs, having never made the CFP in its short history. This year is the year to do it with 12 teams headed to the playoffs in the new format.
The talent is there, but can the Nittany Lions get past the new and improved Big Ten? It won't face Michigan this year, instead scheduling games against former Pac-12 powerhouses Washington, USC and UCLA.
Starting the season against the Mountaineers on the road will be a test for Penn State, as West Virginia is set for a strong season with strong returners.
