Ex-Texas offensive lineman Sam Cosmi has been a standout for the Washington Commanders since he arrived in the nation's capital. Now the team is ensuring he will be for four years longer.

While formal financial terms of Cosmi's four-year extension were not announced by the team or outlets including The Athletic, NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that Cosmi will earn $74 million over the course of the deal. The ESPN reporter revealed on Twitter/X that $45 million of those $74 million are fully guaranteed.

The extension is a timely one for both Cosmi and the Commanders. A 2021 second-round pick, Cosmi is entering the final season of his rookie contract. This extension now takes care of his future, and also marks a rarity for the Washington franchise; Cosmi is the first team draft pick to sign an extension since 2019 draft pick wide receiver Terry McLaurin.

During training camp, Cosmi was business like when it came to a potential extension.

“If I handle everything on the field, that handles itself,” Cosmi said to The Athletic. “Other than that, we’ll see. That’s up to my agent and the guys up in the front office.”

That approach bore fruit, and now it's up to Cosmi to continue producing on the field.
