Boston College and SMU will meet in the 2023 Wasabi Fenway Bowl on Thursday, Dec. 28 at Fenway Park in Boston. The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN and kicks off at 11 a.m.
The Eagles are 6-6 and bowl eligible for the third time in four years under head coach Jeff Hafley.
Boston College is led by graduate offensive guard Christian Mahogany and graduate cornerback Elijah Jones, who were named All-ACC First Team selections.
Mahogany anchored an offensive line that helped pave the way for 193.5 yards rushing per game. Mahogany, who missed all of last season with an injury, was named the ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week twice this season. He had a 79.3 pass blocking grade from PFF and did not allow a quarterback sack or hit on 394 dropbacks.
Jones started nine games at cornerback and twice was named the ACC Defensive Back of the Week. He led the league in interceptions with five and passes defended with 13, while ranking sixth with eight pass break-ups. Jones added 25 tackles and one forced fumble.
Boston College played its home games at Fenway Park for the majority of 21 seasons from 1936-45 and 1953-56. The Eagles last played at Fenway Park in 2017 as the road team against Connecticut; a 39-16 win. The Eagles first appearance back at Fenway since Alumni Stadium was dedicated in 1957 was a 19-16 neutral site defeat to Notre Dame in 2015.
The Mustangs enter the bowl against BC at 11-2 and won their first American Athletic Conference Championship, going undefeated (8-0). The 11 wins are the most by the program since the 1982 National Championship team.
SMU scored 528 points and averaged 40.6 points per game. The Eagles ran for 28 rushing touchdowns — tied for third most in program history. The Mustangs have scored at least 55 points four times this season, the most in program history for a single season.
Defensively, the Mustangs have been one of the best teams in the country. They registered 47 sacks, which ranks second in program history for a single season. SMU had an average margin of victory of 28.9 points in conference games.
SMU starting quarterback Preston Stone suffered a broken leg in the regular season finale. Backup Kevin Jennings led the Mustangs to a 26-14 victory over Tulane in the AAC Championship game. Jennings threw a touchdown pass and accounted for 266 yards from scrimmage in his first career start.
