A new era of college football means a lot of things. Conference realignments, a new playoff structure and even the return of old rivalries. Welcome back, Arkansas and Oklahoma State.
Despite campuses set just three hours apart, the local rivals haven't played in 44 years. They first faced off in 1914, playing nearly every year until the sudden pause in 1980. And you bet the Cowboys want a shot at taking down an SEC foe.
Oklahoma State ended its competition against Arkansas with five straight losses, but it could turn things around this year. The Cowboys are on the verge of making the 12-team playoffs after going 10-4 last year, which included a trip to the Big 12 championships. While the conference will only be harder this year with the addition of former Pac-12 teams, Mike Gundy and Co. have a shot at the title, and a playoff berth, this time around.
And the Razorbacks are their first big opponent in 2024, playing in Stillwater in Week 2. Arkansas needs the quality win, too. After going 4-8 last year, coach Sam Pittman needs to get back to his winning ways, and quick. Oklahoma State will be a challenge, of course, but one within reach.
