This was arguably one of the more competitive Sweet 16 matchups of the weekend, and Miami came in and unseated the last remaining No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, Houston, 89-75 to punch their ticket to a second consecutive Elite Eight on Friday night at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo.
This is the first time in NCAA Tournament history that not a single 1-seeded team is advancing past the Sweet 16.

The Hurricanes had five players score in double figures, led by Nijel Pack, who had 23 and hit seven 3-pointers, second-most in Miami NCAA history. He also joined exclusive company in moving into the top 10 in 3-pointers made in a season.
Isaiah Wong added 20 points, Jordan Miller had 13 and Norchad Omier, who returned from an injury suffered during the ACC Tournament semifinals, scored 12 to go with 13 rebounds. Wooga Poplar tallied 11 points.
The Cougars came in boasting five players averaging double figures. Against Miami, four starters scored in double digits: Jarace Walker with 16 (plus 11 rebounds), Jamal Shead with 15, and Marcus Sasser and Tramon Mark with 14 each.
Houston and Miami both have a long history of success. The respective — coaches Houston's Kelvin Sampson and Miami's Jim Larrañaga — have compiled 1,456 wins, 27 NCAA Tournament appearances and three Final Four trips. They're accustomed to greatness and the spotlight of regional competition.
This 2023 run matches the farthest a Miami team has advanced in the NCAA Tournament.

9:27 p.m.: Brackets are all over the place as the final titan goes down. The Hurricanes best the Cougars and for the first time in NCAA history, there will be No. 1 seeds in the Elite Eight, Final Four and national championship games. Miami will advance to the Elite Eight for the second consecutive year and play the winner of Xavier/Texas, which tips off at 9:45 p.m.
"All the credit goes to this guy [Pack], he knocked down every shot," Larrañaga said on the broadcast.
8:57 p.m.: Houston is the final No. 1 seed standing in the 2023 NCAA Tournament, but Miami has them in a headlock under a 14 point lead. This could be the first time in history that not a single 1-seed makes it past the Sweet 16...
8:46 p.m.: Well, not even a minute later and Pack has broken his career-high of three-pointers made. He hits another to go 7-for-9 from beyond the arc for 23 points and the bench is wild. That's three in a row for the transfer from Kansas State. Broadcasters beg the question, "Who's going to guard this?!"
8:45 p.m.: Pack has currently tied his career-high of three-pointers made (5). He's 5-for-7 from deep.
Halftime: Miami 42, Houston 36
8:05 p.m.: Miami only committed one turnover in the entirety of the first half and managed to score 15 points off Houston's six. Pack is leading with 14 points, Wong adds 12 points and Omier adds 8 rebounds for the Canes. Sasser is leading with 11 points and Walker adds 7 rebounds for the Cougars at halftime. Larrañga says on the broadcast that Houston has made some very pretty threes, and they're focusing on keeping them from the twos.
7:41 p.m.: Pack has hit a milestone in his career with the Canes. He's got three triples on the night and 79 on the season, joining elite sharpshooting ranks on Miami's top-10 single-season made three-pointers list.
7:40 p.m.: Miami is on fire, up 29-23 going into another timeout. Three dunks knocked back in 13 minutes, courtesy of Miller and Anthony Walker. Sasser and Mark have combined for 16 of Houston's 23 points.
7:35 p.m.: Second TV timeout and we've seen six lead changes already. Houston is back up by one thanks to Emanuel Sharp and it's raining threes in Kansas City.
7:30 p.m.: Sasser sinks one in from downtown, giving the Cougars the lead.
7:20 p.m.: Wong dishes out a solid 4-point play.
7:19 p.m.: Sasser opens scoring with a solid jumper. Miami gets a second chance with an offensive rebound. Pack drives a three-pointer and Wong adds another for good measure and Miami takes an early lead.
7:15 p.m.: Houston wins the tip and play is underway for the Midwest regional.
