The NBA 2K League finds itself at a crossroads, currently on hiatus after six years of competition.

In its current format, which saw the world's elite NBA 2K players compete in both 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 gameplay with up to $2 million in prize money up for grabs in the total prize pool, the NBA 2K League experienced solid expansion and growth in its early years.

Tipping off in 2018 with 17 teams, each affiliated with NBA teams, the NBA 2K League is the first official Esports league operated by a U.S. professional sports league and has grown to 25 teams, including three from overseas — The Gen.G Tigers (China), DUX Infinitos (Mexico) and NBL Oz Gaming (Australia).

Fast forward to 2024 and the joint venture between the NBA and Take-Two Interactive, which owns NBA 2K is currently undergoing a strategic overhaul with the league announcing in July they're "reimagining the NBA 2K League into a global digital entertainment business."

So what does that mean exactly?

Moving away from a traditional Esports league, the revamped NBA 2K League will transition to a digital media brand, with immersive live events and a new-look competitive league.

Leaning into social media influencers/creators, NBA and WNBA athletes, and celebrities, the new NBA 2K League is set to engage a younger audience focusing on social media as a means to broaden the scope of fans that interact with both the game and the league itself.

"I'm really excited about that," Ronnie 2K, Digital Marketing Director of 2K Games, told The Sporting News.

"There's nothing I can share,  but I know they're very excitedly working on what the next phase of that is, and I'm thrilled for them.

"I think finding that balance of competitive and entertainment, and widening the community net around 2K, like what we've done with the brand to bring that to the 2K League is really exciting."

While 2K is tight-lipped about the exact details of what the 2025 season will look like, expect some updates on the new-look league in the coming months.
