How does Indy 500 qualifying work?

All Indy 500 drivers will get the opportunity to qualify for the Indy 500 on Saturday, May 18, but some will have to return Sunday for another chance.

The top 12 finishers in Saturday's qualifier will return on Sunday to determine the order. This group is split between 1-6 and 7-12. Drivers can secure their spot in either group on Saturday but will finalize the order on Sunday.

A last-chance qualifying race also occurs on Sunday, if necessary. This would determine the 31-33 spots if not already decided. Drivers are allowed to make multiple attempts at improving their speed until the allotted time runs out.
