Phillies ‘top-tier’ prospect could cause infield shakeup in near future

The Philadelphia Phillies are about to run into a great problem: the organization has too much infield talent.

Alec Bohm, Trea Turner, and Bryce Harper were all voted to the National League All-Star team in 2024, and none of them are older than 31.

Harper’s future in Philly is not in doubt, but is the left side of Philadelphia’s infield also locked in for years to come? It would make sense given Bohm’s and Turner’s talent, but there’s another — perhaps greater — talent waiting in the wings for the Phillies at either third base or shortstop.

20-year-old Aidan Miller, whom Philadelphia drafted at No. 27 overall in the 2023 draft, is already showing signs of star power.

Miller is currently considered one of the Phillies’ top three prospects alongside pitcher Andrew Painter and outfielder Justin Crawford, the latter of whom is also just 20.

Miller’s youth is even more striking due to his recent displays of power at the plate, something that usually doesn’t surface until a player has matured physically.

In an article published on Saturday entitled, “Roman Anthony and MLB's 25 Best Prospects 20 Years Old or Younger in 2024”, Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter ranked Miller at No. 14 and discussed his potential to play either shortstop or third base in the future.

“One of the best power hitters in the 2023 prep class with more than enough hit tool to make the most of it, Miller went No. 27 overall to the Phillies and has quickly developed into a top-tier prospect,” Reuter said.

“He is hitting .262/.373/.453 with 25 doubles, 10 home runs, 56 RBI and 20 steals in 88 games between Single-A and High-A, and he continues to get regular reps at shortstop, though third base could be his future home.”

Do Bohm and Turner present a blockade to Miller’s future in Philadelphia, or will GM Dave Dombrowski ultimately make a move to clear some salary while simultaneously launching Miller into the spotlight?

It’s a fascinating roster-building narrative that the Phillies will be monitoring over the next 12 to 24 months.
