The Dodgers have to shut down one of their top prospects for the season. Doug McKain of Dodgers Nation on Wednesday reported right-handed pitcher Kyle Hurt is having Tommy John surgery

Hurt is the Dodgers' No. 5 overall prospect and No. 3 pitching prospect according to MLB.com's prospect rankings. The 26-year-old had a brief cup of coffee in the Majors with four appearances, but he's been good in those stints. Hurt has pitched 8.2 MLB innings and posted a 1.04 ERA with one walk and six strikeouts.

In the Minors this season he made 13 appearances and two starts for Triple-A Oklahoma City. He had a 3.07 ERA in 14.2 innings, walking 12 and striking out 22.

His last appearance with Los Angeles came on April 16 when he started and went 2.0 scoreless innings vs. Washington. Hurt allowed three hits in that appearance before heading back to Triple-A.

Given where we're at in the season, if he does return next year, it'd likely be late in the season. It's more likely we won't see Hurt at full strength again until 2026. An official announcement from the Dodgers should give us a better idea of their projected timetable.
