Zohaib Rasheed, a Pakistani boxer, has sparked controversy after disappearing in Italy following an act of theft from a teammate's bag.
The Pakistan Amateur Boxing Federation revealed the incident, expressing deep concern over Rasheed's behaviour.
Rasheed had travelled to Italy to participate in an Olympic qualifying tournament but reportedly stole money from a fellow teammate's (Laura Ikram) bag before disappearing - when she had gone for training.
Colonel Nasir Ahmed, the secretary of the national federation, condemned Rasheed's actions, labelling them as embarrassing for both the federation and the country.
What has been said?
"It is most embarrassing for the federation and country the way Zohaib Rasheed has behaved as he had gone there as part of a five-member squad to take part in an Olympic qualifying tournament," the national federation's secretary, Colonel Nasir Ahmed said.
"The police have been informed and they are now searching for him but he is not in contact with anyone," he added.
Will there be punitive action against Zohaib?
Rasheed's participation was part of a five-member squad representing Pakistan in the crucial Olympic qualifying event.
Rasheed, previously recognized as a rising talent in Pakistani boxing circles, earned a bronze medal at the Asian Boxing Championships last year. However, his recent conduct has tarnished his reputation and brought disgrace to the sport.
In response to the incident, the federation promptly informed the Pakistan Embassy in Italy and filed a police report. While there has been no official statement from the embassy yet, it is anticipated that Rasheed may face deportation back to Pakistan. Additionally, he is likely to encounter disciplinary actions from both the boxing association and potential legal repercussions for his actions.
