India's women's team in the compound bow category made history at the Berlin World Archery Championships on Friday.

What was the result of the World Archery Championships 2023?

On Friday, 4 August, the women's team compound bow final was contested between India and Mexico. The two teams had finished second and first respectively in qualifying, making it a fitting summit clash.

India had already shocked the archery world by beating Colombia 220-216 in the seminfinal to qualify for the final, and Mexico were still favourites for the title.

Going into the final round, the score was 177-172 in India's favour. With three perfect 10s compared to Mexico's three nines, the lead was extended to eight points with three shots to go. Mexico then rounded off the final by making three 10s, leaving India with 23 to score in their last three shots.

Parneet Kaur stepped up to score a 10, with Aditi Swami following her effort up with a nine. By the time Jyothi Surekha Vennam stepped up, only five points were required. She scored a nine to spark wild celebrations among the Indian contingent at the ground.

 

 

Is this India's first gold medal at the World Archery Championships?

Vennam, Kaur and Swami have made history by securing India's first-ever gold at the World Archery Championships, which have taken place since 1931.

Indians have previously won nine silver medals and two bronze medals. Jyoti Surekha Vennam herself has won an individual silver medal (2021 Yankton) and an individual bronze medal (2019 's-Hertogenbosch).

The USA is the most successful country at the World Archery Championships, with a total of 137 medals.
