PV Sindhu was eliminated from the Indonesia Open 2023 women's singles event after she went down to world No. 3 Tai Tzu Ying on Thursday in Jakarta by a scoreline of 21-18, 21-16.
On the other hand, Kidambi Srikanth advanced to the men's singles quarter-finals by defeating compatriot Lakshya Sen 21-17, 22-20 at the Istora Senayan Sports Arena.
Sindhu, currently ranked 14th in the world, was slow to get off the blocks which saw Ying race to a 17-10 lead in the first game. However, a late surge from the Indian saw her cover lost ground and make it 19-17. But a lapse in concentration cost her dearly as she was edged out 21-18.
Things started on an even keel in the second game and eventually, Sindhu had her nose in front at 16-14. However, once again she lost her footing at a crucial stage which saw her opponent pick up seven consecutive points to seal the match in her favour in just 39 minutes.
Meanwhile, Srikanth, ranked 22nd in the latest badminton rankings, held his nerves in the first game at 17-17 and went on to take advantage by winning four successive points.
In the second game, he was comfortably cruising at 20-14 but Sen staged an incredible comeback to draw level at 20-20. However, the veteran once again produced the goods at the nick of time to win in straight games within 45 minutes. He is set to face reigning All England champion Li Shi Feng of China in the quarter-finals.
HS Prannoy, ranked 9th in the BWF world rankings, also progressed to the last eight after getting the better of NG Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong with a score of 21-18, 21-16. In the next round, he faces a tough challenge against Kodai Naraoka of Japan, who is ranked 4th in the world.

However, despite putting up a valiant fight against 2nd-ranked Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indonesia, Priyanshu Rajawat lost the match with a score of 22-20, 15-21, 15-21.
In the men's doubles category, the Indian team of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy progressed to the quarter-finals after defeating China's He Jing Ting and Zhou Hao Dong with a score of 21-17, 21-15.
