Indians at Australian Open 2023 badminton: PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth advance

The Australian Open began on Tuesday, 1 August at the State Sports Centre in Sydney. The tournament is the nineteenth of the year on the BWF World Tour.

A total of 15 Indian teams and 18 different Indian players are part of the main draw for the tournament, across the five categories.

How did Indian players perform at the Australian Open?

On Wednesday, the men's singles matches began, and in the completed ones thus far, India has had a clean sweep.

Priyanshu Rajawat and Srikanth Kidambi beat Nathan Tang and Kenta Nishimoto respectively, in two games each. HS Prannoy needed three games to get past Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong.

The Indians yet to take the court on day 2 are Mithun Manjunath, up against fourth seed Loh Kean Yew, as well as Kiran George and Lakshya Sen who will play each other in the first round.

In the women's singles category, Aakarshi Kashyap beat Goh Jin Wei in the first round to set up a second round clash with fellow Indian PV Sindhu, who beat Ashmita Chaliha in her first game.

Tasneem Mir and Malvika Bansod are yet to play, against Komang Dewi and Pai Yu-po respectively.

Both of India's mixed doubles pairs crashed out in the first round, as B Sumeeth Reddy and Ashwini Ponnappa lost to Hiroki Midorikawa and Natsu Saito, and Rohan Kapoor and Sikki Reddy lost to third seeds Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yoo-jung.

Earlier, on Tuesday, women's doubles pair Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand took the court first. They secured a solid, if not easy, round one victory over Canadian duo Catherine Choi and Josephine Wu. They will play fourth seed Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Nagahara from Japan on 2 August.

Next up, in the same category were Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa. They were easily dealt with by Indonesians Febriana Kusuma and Amalia Pratiwi 21-11, 14-21, 21-17.
