Her year started with three consecutive first-round exits; at the Malaysia Open to Carolina Marín, the India Open to Supanida Katethong and the All England Open to Zhang Yiman. At the Swiss Open in March, Sindhu made it past the first round only to suffer defeat in the second round against Jenjira Stadelmann.
The Spain Masters saw a resurgence from Sindhu, as she made it all the way to the final, eventually falling to Gregoria Tunjung. Sindhu lost to Tunjung again at the Malaysia Masters, this time in the semi-final.

Sindhu made the semifinals at the Canada Open in July, losing to Akane Yamaguchi. A quarterfinal berth followed at the US Open, before consecutive first round exits in the Korea and Japan Opens which came after she formally announced Muhammad Hafiz Hashim as her new coach.
