The FIDE Candidates tournament for 2024 came to an end on April 22, with the challenger to current World Champion Ding Liren finally decided.

In a nail-biting final round Indian grandmaster Gukesh D took on USA's Hikaru Nakamura in a virtual knockout for the top spot. With a half point lead, Gukesh needed just a draw to maintain his lead at the top of the table and did so, forcing the result with black pieces after 71 moves.

The result meant Gukesh topped the table, and he will now play the World Chess Championship 2024 final against Ding Liren. At 17 years old, the Chennai-born grandmaster is the youngest-ever winner of the tournament, and will be the youngest player to take part in a World Chess Championship match.

After the match, Russian chess legend Garry Kasparov had words of high praise for Gukesh and the young Indian players on the scene, claiming that the 'children' of Indian chess trailblazer Viswanathan Anand were on the loose.

Gukesh made waves last year when he defeated world no.1 Magnus Carlsen at the age of just 16, becoming the youngest to do so. He is not the only Indian prodigy performing well on the circuit at present, with the likes of R Praggnanandha, R Vaishali, Vidit Gujrathi, Koneru Humpy and Arjun Erigaisi also flying the flag for the country.
