Asian Games 2023: India's weightlifting squad revealed

The four-person Indian weightlifting team for the Asian Games 2023 will include Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu and 2022 Commonwealth Games champion Achinta Sheuli, according to a report from Sportstar.

Asian Games 2023, slated to take place in Hangzhou, China from September 23 to October 8, will see Mirabai Chanu feature in the women's 49kg category and Achinta Sheuli in the men's 73kg category.

The gold medalist from the 2021 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, Bindyarani Devi, has also been included in the team. The 24-year-old will compete in the women's 55kg category. 

N Ajith, the current National Games champion, will round up the Indian team. Together with Achinta Sheuli, the weightlifter from Tamil Nadu will compete in the 73kg division.

Where are the weightlifters training ahead of Asian Games 2023?

Mirabai Chanu, a two-time gold medalist at the Commonwealth Games, is presently receiving instruction from Dr. Aron Horschig at SQUAT University in St. Louis. Following hip surgery in December last year, Mirabai Chanu, 28, underwent a five-month rehabilitation program before making a comeback to competitive play in May.

Mirabai Chanu competed just once this year, at the 2023 Asian Weightlifting Championships in Jinju, Republic of Korea, where she finished sixth.

In addition to Mirabai Chanu, Bindyarani Devi is training in St. Louis. In the women's 55kg category, Bindyarani Devi, 24, took home two silver medals from the Asian Weightlifting Championships 2023 in South Korea back in May.

N Ajith and Achinta Sheuli were placed ninth and tenth overall in the men's 73kg event at the Asian Championships 2023 in May, respectively, in their first competition of the year.

The Junior Olympics Jeremy Lalrinnunga began the 2023 campaign with a silver medal at the Asian Championships in Ma in the 67kg division.
