The Athletics Federation of India have announced a strong Indian contingent for the Asian Athletics Championships to be held in Bangkok, Thailand from July 12 to 16.
The team was picked as athletes met the qualification marks set by the AFI for the competition. A preliminary team was picked after the Federation Cup back in May and the final participants were confirmed after the Inter-State Athletics Championships held in Bhubaneswar in June.
Tajinderpal Singh Toor, who currently holds the Asian record in shotput, will lead the Indian challenge in Southeast Asia. Other prominent performers who are expected to finish on the podium are long-jumper, Murali Sreeshankar, Jyothi Yarraji, long jumper Shaili Singh and Rezoana Mallick Heena, the reigning Asian U20 women’s 400m champion.
However, India will miss Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra and 3000m steeplechase athlete Avinash Sable, as the two of them are preparing for the World Athletics Championships in August. Moreover, 400m runner Muhammed Anas has also failed to make the cut due to performance issues.
A few athletes pulled out due to injuries such as triple jump national record holder Praveen Chithravel, long jumper Jeswin Aldrin and javelin thrower Rohit Yadav.
Olympian, Anju Bobby George, is the team leader of the Indian contingent.
