Max Verstappen made it another perfect weekend for himself and his Red Bull team as he won the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix with ease.

Leading from the front thanks to his qualifying result, the Dutchman proved unstoppable again as he closes in on a third straight World Drivers Championship title this season. That win was also the 100th victory for Red Bull and keeps up their 100% winning record this season, finishing top in all seven races.

The victory was also Verstappen's 41st in Formula One, the fifth most in the sport's history and the same amount as legendary Brazilian racer Ayrton Senna.

Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso continued his great form this season by finishing P2, whilst his old rival Lewis Hamilton came home in P3. His Mercedes teammate George Russell was  forced to retire from the race however after damaging his car by hitting the wall at corner six early on in the grand prix.

Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz, Sergio Perez, Alex Albon, Esteban Ocon, Lance Stroll and Valtteri Bottas rounded out the points paying positions.

F1 Canadian Grand Prix 2023 live updates, highlights: As it happens

CHEQUERED FLAG: MAX VERSTAPPEN WINS THE 2023 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX!! It proves to be another perfect day for Red Bull's Dutch champion who takes his 41st F1 win - the same amount as the legendary Ayrton Senna. He's charging towards another World Drivers' Championship title this season.

Lap 67: Verstappen has a moment as he smashes into the sausage kerb but he laughs it off over the radio. He's simply unstoppable this season.

Lap 65: Norris finally gets past Bottas for P9 on the back straight but he needs to open up the gap immediately given his five-second penalty.

Lap 62: Hamilton is sliding around the track, using every inch of the circuit to try gain an advantage but it's not enough right now.

The gap is back up to over two seconds as Alonso says on the radio, "leave it to me."

Lap 59: Hamilton is beginning to turn the screw and close in on Alonso for P2. The Spaniard driver has a 1.5 second lead for now but he's having to lift and coast to help his brakes out.

Lap 56: Russell is out! After all the work fighting back to get into the points positions following his collision with the wall earlier in the race, he's forced to retire.

Lap 53: A number of drivers are saying that the wind is picking up which makes driving a little harder around Montreal. The skies are getting a bit darker too, might we get some rain here?

Lap 49: Just a word on Williams who with Albon are having a fantastic race here. He's sat in P7 for now and is handily fighting off the advances of Russell.

Lap 47: Hamilton now puts in the fastest lap of the race as the cars come alive with less fuel on board. Verstappen still leads by 5.3 seconds to Alonso.

Lap 44: Sainz, Leclerc and Perez take it in turns to put in the fastest lap of this race. The Ferrari pair are on hard tyres whilst the Mexican maestro in on mediums and is catching Sainz quickly.

Lap 42: Verstappen, Alonso and Hamilton now pit. No drama and the trio resume the race in P1, P2 and P3 respectively.

Lap 41: It's Leclerc's time to pit now and he comes out ahead of Sainz and Perez in P4.

Crucial for Ferrari.

Lap 39: Perez pits for the first time and comes back out in P7 on a new set of mediums. Sainz responds, pits himself and he comes out back infront of the Red Bull man.

Norris gets a five-second penalty for 'unsportmanlike driving' after slowing too much under the safety car.

YELLOW FLAG: De Vries and Magnussen collide and both go straight on at corner three. The AlphaTauri driver locked up and took the Haas with him and Russell gets past the pair. Both reverse and continue but both lost a lot of time there.

Lap 34: Verstappen is complaining about a lack of grip and even though he could go to the end of this race on the hard tyres, he'll likely stop again.

That probably goes for Alonso and Hamilton as well which could make things interesting.

Lap 30: The lead at the front is now up to four seconds from Alonso who himself has a 2.6 gap to Hamilton.

Will that be today's finishing grid or is there more drama to come yet?

Lap 26: After getting close to his teammate, Sainz is ordered not to attack Leclerc. The pair are both on medium tyres and are running in P4 and P5 but haven't stopped yet.

They really need another safety car stoppage because at the moment when they pit, they'll come out way down the order with every other driver already on hard tyres..

Lap 24: Hamilton escapes without a penalty for an unsafe release but he's lost DRS to Alonso already after just two laps. That Aston Martin in the Spaniard's hands is an absolute rocket here in Montreal.

Lap 22: Alonso gets past Hamilton and is up into P2!! The Aston Martin man flies past his old rival down the back straight and makes the move stick.

Lap 20: Verstappen has already pulled out a 1.6 second lead to Hamilton who is still under investigation from race officials for an unsafe release.

The middle pack is proving an interesting battle. Bottas sits in P8 after overtaking Magnussen who was then passed by Norris just after.

Lap 16: We're back underway and it's Verstappen from, Hamilton, Alonso, Leclerc, Sainz and Perez.

Crucially, the Ferrari pair didn't pit during the safety car even though both are on medium tyres. Perez also didn't stop but he's on the hards which could help the Mexican driver out massively here.

Lap 14: Norris and Albon also nearly collide in the pit with the McLaren team at fault. Somehow Russell is carrying on here even though the replays showed it was a huge collision with the wall at turn nine.

YELLOW FLAG: The safety car is out as Russell smashes the barrier!! It's a big collision with the wall but he manages to limp back to the pitlane. Hamilton then nearly hits Alonso on the way out of the pitstop which will probably incur a penalty.

Lap 12: There's a healthy train of cars from Hulkenberg all the way down to Nyck de Vries in P17. A few pit including the German driver but that DRS aid is really important here in Montreal for both attacking and defending.

Lap 10: It's back to green flag racing and Alonso continues his pursuit of Hamilton. Piastri gets past Hulkenberg and the McLaren rookie is up to P6!

YELLOW FLAG: Yellow flags in sector 2 and Sargeant is out of this race. His Williams engineer orders him to stop at corner six and the virtual safety car is out.

Lap 6: Verstappen's lead is now up to over two seconds as he continues to pull out a gap to Hamilton who is under big pressure from Alonso.

Russell is in P4 with Ocon behind but by a long distance. Leclerc, Sainz and Perez sit in P9, P11 and P12 respectively.

Lap 4: Alonso punches in the fastest lap of the race so far as he looks to get back past Hamilton and into P2. Verstappen leads by over a second.

LIGHTS OUT: It's away we go at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and Verstappen holds the lead. It's a perfect start for the Dutchman though Hamilton jumps Alonso into P2! That's a great start for the British driver. All the drivers get away cleanly though Magnussen taps the back of Perez heading into the final corner. No damage done.

2 minutes to lights out: We're off for the formation lap ahead of the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix. Will it be another Verstappen victory today or can someone upset the Dutchman in Montreal? We're about to find out.

15 minutes to lights out: The drivers are now heading to the front of the grid for the national anthem.

30 minutes to lights out: The pit lane is open and all of the cars have made their way to the grid for today's race.

Unlike qualifying yesterday, it's dry and warm conditions for now with little to no chance of rain during this race.

1 hour to lights out: Red Bull's Max Verstappen has given an interview this weekend basically saying that 'winning championships is getting too repetitive for him.'

He said, "Now that I've won a championship it's nice to win another one and another one but basically it's the same thing so it is not something that will keep me here forever". It's quite the statement and again, it sheds light on his long-term involvement in Formula One that might not last as long as some might think it will.

Will he win again in Montreal this afternoon? You've got to say that given his form so far this season, it feels almost guaranteed..

1 hour and 30 minutes to lights out: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News' live coverage of the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix taking place on the banks of the St. Lawrence river in Montreal.
