The Euro 2024 Round of 16 knockout stage wraps up on July 2 with Romania's clash against the Netherlands the penultimate game of the first knockout stage.

Both sides finished the group stage on four points, with Romania topping Group E ahead of Belgium, as the Dutch qualified for the next round as the best third place finisher.

Romania have caused a few shocks already at the tournament, and Ronald Koeman's Netherlands are under pressure to respond to a low key start, with a quarterfinal against either Austria or Turkey on the horizon for the winner.

Romania vs. Netherlands lineups & team news

Romania head coach Edward Iordănescu has kept changes to a minimum in their push to the Round of 16. However, he will be forced into at least one rotation with left-back Nicușor Bancu serving a one game ban and Deian Sorescu is set to replace him.

Romania projected starting lineup (4-1-4-1): Nita (GK) — Ratiu, Dragusin, Burca, Sorescu — M. Marin — Hagi, R. Marin, Stanciu, Coman — Dragus.

Koeman has confirmed PSV Eindhoven midfielder Joey Veerman is struggling with a minor injury and could miss out for the Dutch.

Gini Wijnadum could slot in as his replacement but veteran striker Wout Weghorst is set to remain as a weapon off the bench.

Netherlands projected starting lineup (4-3-3): Verbruggen (GK) — Geertruida, de Vrij, van Dijk, Ake — Wijnaldum, Schouten, Reijnders — Malen, Depay, Gakpo.

Romania vs. Netherlands prediction

  • Score prediction: Romania 1-2 Netherlands

Koeman's team have struggled for consistency so far at Euro 2024 but a 'favourable' draw in the knockout rounds offers a key chance to recover.

The Dutch do score goals, with four netted from three group games, and eight in their two pre-tournament warm up friendlies.

Romania dug deep to get into the Round of 16, but the Dutch will be confident of powering on into the last eight, despite their defensive concerns.
