Manchester United claimed their first win of preseason with a 2-0 victory over Rangers at Murrayfield in their final friendly before they head for a tour of the United States.

Goals in each half from Amad Diallo and Joe Hugill secured a deserved win for Erik ten Hag's team, who had a point to prove after frustrating their manager with the manner of their performance in the 1-0 loss to Rosenborg on Monday.

Ten Hag handed a first start for new €62 million signing Leny Yoro, just 48 hours after his arrival from Lille was finalised. The 18-year-old lined up in defence alongside veteran Jonny Evans and largely impressed in his 45 minutes on the pitch, aside from one slack pass that put United in difficulty.

There was also a first Red Devils outing in nearly a year for Jadon Sancho, who has been brought back into the fold after he and Ten Hag agreed to draw a line under the dispute that saw him exiled last season. And while Sancho was a bright spark on a grey day in Edinburgh, it was Amad on the other wing who looked United's best player.

A former loanee with Rangers, Amad gave new left-back Jefte a torrid time, setting up Ethan Wheatley for what should have been the opening goal before drawing a foul from the full-back and curling a free-kick just wide. He fully deserved his goal when it came, the 22-year-old cutting in onto his left foot and drilling a low finish past Jack Butland.

Ten Hag changed the whole team but for goalkeeper Andre Onana at halftime, and Hugill made the most of his opportunity to stake a claim for the US tour. The 20-year-old striker crashed a shot in off the crossbar from 20 yards out after good play from Maxi Oyedele.

United will now have a week to prepare for a friendly against Arsenal at SoFi Stadium. Their opening game of the new Premier League season is on August 16 against Fulham at Old Trafford.

Man United vs. Rangers lineups & team news

The big news for United fans was new signing Leny Yoro being included in the 26-man matchday squad for this game and making his first start for the club barely 48 hours after his transfer was finalised.

The Red Devils confirmed that Antony, Victor Lindelof and Marcus Rashford were absent with "small niggles" while Harry Maguire continues to work on his fitness following the injury that kept him out of the FA Cup final and Euro 2024.

Joshua Zirkzee was no involved, but there was a first United appearance for Jadon Sancho since last August.

Nico Raskin is likely out for the next six weeks with an ankle injury sustained against Ajax.
