The 2024 UEFA European Championship, more commonly known as Euro 2024, will mark the 17th edition of the tournament and is set to be hosted by Germany from June 14 to July 14.

Notably, it will be the first time a reunified Germany has staged the tournament as the sole host nation.

Italy enters the tournament as the defending champion, after winning the postponed 2020 edition against England in the final at Wembley. That tournament was delayed by a year due to COVID-19.

Ahead of the 2024 spectacle, we look at all the countries to have staged the continental get-together.

The European Championship host is decided by the UEFA Executive Committee through a confidential ballot, requiring a simple majority of votes to win. In case of a tie, the UEFA President would have the final say on the country who receives the honor.

With Germany hosting the 2024 edition, below we have a look at the host nations throughout the history of the competition.

Which country has hosted the Euros most?

Scroll to Continue with Content

France has hosted the UEFA European Championships three times in total, the most by any country to date.

In fact, Les Bleus were responsible for hosting the inaugural Euros tournament in 1960, which was won by the Soviet Union.

Thereafter, France hosted the seventh and 15th editions of the tournament in 1984 and 2016, respectively. Although the French have acted as the organizers three times, they have only gone on to win the competition once, being victorious when they have played host in 1984.

How many times has Germany hosted the Euros?

This will be Germany's second time hosting the championship, with matches to be played across the entire country, including <a href="https://www.sportingnews.com/us/soccer/news/where-euro-2024-final-stadi… final in Munich on July 14.

The decision to award them hosting duties was made back in 2018 at UEFA's headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, where Germany beat Turkey in a vote.

For Euro 2024, Germany had numerous stadium options. Ten venues were ultimately selected, with nine of them having been used during the 2006 FIFA World Cup. These include Berlin, Dortmund, Munich, Cologne, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Leipzig, Frankfurt and Gelsenkirchen.

Has a host nation ever won the Euros?

Throughout the history of the UEFA European Championship, host nations have generally performed well.

Three countries have won the Euro while hosting the tournament: Spain in 1964, Italy in 1968 and France in 1984.

Additionally, two other host nations have reached the final but ended up losing: Portugal in 2004 (to Greece), and France in 2016 (to Portugal).

Italy is the only team to have won the tournament as a co-host in 2021. The 16th edition of the Euros was spread across 11 countries with the final being played at Wembley.
