Manchester City take on Manchester United in the FA Cup final at Wembley on Saturday, May 25, 2024.

<a href="https://www.sportingnews.com/uk/football/news/man-city-premier-league-g… claimed their fourth Premier League title in a row as they beat <a href="https://www.sportingnews.com/uk/premier-league/news/man-city-vs-west-ha… Ham 3-1 on the final day of the Premier League season. A win at Wembley would secure another league-and-cup double to follow last season's treble, which included <a href="https://www.sportingnews.com/uk/football/news/who-won-fa-cup-final-2023… 2-1 win over Man United in the FA Cup final.

For Erik ten Hag's side, this will be the final chance at securing European football next season. The Dutchman oversaw the club's <a href="https://www.sportingnews.com/uk/football/news/manchester-united-premier… ever Premier League position as they ended the campaign in eighth place, despite a 2-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion on the final day.

<a href="https://www.sportingnews.com/uk/premier-league/news/premier-league-euro… winner of the FA Cup automatically qualifies for the Europa League, which would see Newcastle United denied a place in the Conference League if United were to win, and Chelsea knocked down from the Europa League to accommodate United's place.

The Sporting News takes a look at who will be the referee for the final at the home of football.

Madley told the FA website how excited he is to officiate the match.

"When I got the call with the appointment, I'd just got in my car. I have to be honest, I heard 'FA Cup final' and missed the rest of the call — I was stunned! It's an absolute delight and honour to receive this appointment," he said.

"Domestically, it's the biggest game of any referee's career — the one we all dream of when we complete the referee course. I can only imagine what it will be like to lead the two teams out in front of a sold-out Wembley. To receive this appointment off the back of my hard work this season is truly humbling.

"I've worked with assistant referees Harry Lennard and Nick Hopton all season, so to do this final with them is particularly special, as well as the support of the superb wider team around me. We'll prepare for the game as we do week in, week out, in order to deliver a strong team performance on the day."

Madley's most recent match was <a href="https://www.sportingnews.com/uk/premier-league/news/premier-league-live… 3-0 win at Sheffield United on the Premier League final day. He also recently oversaw Chelsea's 5-0 thrashing of West Ham and <a href="https://www.sportingnews.com/uk/premier-league/news/everton-vs-liverpoo… 2-0 Merseyside derby win over Liverpool.

He was also the man in the middle for the Manchester derby on March 3 at the Etihad Stadium, in which <a href="https://www.sportingnews.com/uk/football/news/man-city-vs-man-united-li… City beat United 3-1.
