Suryakumar Yadav made the headlines for all the right reasons as he became the hero of a billion people after he took David Miller’s decisive catch in the Final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados.

It was a moment of redemption for the explosive batter after his disastrous performance in the ODI World Cup Final 2023 wherein India lost to Australia.

Since the win in Barbados, there’s been a huge rise in Surya’s stocks and he had been confirmed to take over as the new captain of the Indian T20I side last year.

In July 2024, BCCI announced the ODI and T20I squads for India's series against Sri Lanka where Yadav was named as the captain in the shortest format.

In his first assignment as skipper, Yadav led India to a 3-0 series win over the Lankans. In his upcoming assignment, he is gearing up to lead India in a 5-match T20I series at home.

What is Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy record in domestic cricket?

Surya boasts a terrific captaincy record at the domestic level. He led the Mumbai team to a Vijay Hazare win in 2014. Deeply appreciated for his leadership and man management skills, Surya was rewarded with the captaincy of the Mumbai team for the Ranji Trophy season in 2015. 

Although he only led the team for a single game against Madhya Pradesh, Surya’s leadership skills were recognized by the board. In 17 T20 matches at the domestic level, Surya led the team to victory for a total of 11 times.

What is Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy record in T20Is?

Surya was first appointed the skipper of the Indian T20I side for the series against Australia in November 2023. He made his captaincy debut on November 23, 2023, just four days after India’s loss in the ODI World Cup Final. 

India managed to win that series 4-1, after which Surya was further retained as captain of the T20I side for the South Africa series.

Against South Africa, Surya’s team drew the series 1-. The first game was abandoned due to rain while South Africa won the second one. In the third game, the Men in Blue made the perfect comeback by winning the game by 106 runs. 

The skipper scored a magical century in the third T20I game. However following the knock, he was injured during India’s fielding and was sidelined from the game until the IPL 2024 season. 

Surya boasts of a brilliant record at the international T20 stage as well, winning 14 out of the 17 games he has led the team.
