Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting who was also the former coach of the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to join a new IPL franchise next season.

Ponting had parted ways with the Delhi franchise despite moderate success, however, during his tenure, the team did not manage to win any trophies.
With several teams in the hunt for new leadership roles including captaincy and head coach, Ponting could bring in his vast years of experience and insights to the new franchise.

According to Cricbuzz , it was reported that the former DC coach was close to making a deal with the Punjab Kings franchise and the agreement is at the final stages.
It has now been confirmed that Ponting has been appointed as the new head coach of the Punjab Kings franchise, replacing Trevor Bayliss in the role.
According to ESPN Cricinfo, the former Australian captain has signed a multi-year contract with the Punjab franchise, however, his support staff for the upcoming season is yet to be confirmed.
"Ricky Ponting, the former Australian captain, is close to signing a deal with Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League. There is no confirmation from either party at the time of publishing this report," the Cricbuzz report said.
"The Australian legend, who had been the head coach of Delhi Capitals, has been in talks with the Punjab Kings team and may have been close to reaching an agreement." it added.

Under Ricky Ponting, the Capitals had reached their first-ever IPL final in the 2020 season and had consistently qualified for the playoffs of the tournament in 2019, 2020 and 2021 seasons as well.
However, the two parties decided to part ways and put an end to their seven-year relationship since 2018, after disappointing performances in the last couple of seasons
If Ponting is appointed as the head coach of the Punjab Kings, the franchise could benefit immensely during the mega auction as his knowledge of the sport will prove to be greatly valuable for the owners.
It is likely that the former Australian will be provided with a fresh slate of players to pick from ahead of the next season in 2025.
