The decision to appoint South Africa’s former pacer as the new bowling coach of India by the BCCI comes after the recommendation of Gautam Gambhir, who replaced Rahul Dravid as the new head coach of the team since India’s triumph in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
Coincidentally, previous to Morkel, Gambhir had mentored LSG in the 2023 season, leading the team to a finish in the playoffs.
Ahead of the 2025 season, LSG will be looking for a new mentor, and a certain Indian bowler is rumoured to join a star-studded coaching lineup consisting of Lance Kluesener, Johnty Rhodes and Adam Voges.

Who will be LSG’s new mentor?
Per Cricbuzz, former Indian pacer, Zaheer Khan is rumoured to join LSG as their new mentor. Zaheer was initially bound to join the Indian team as the new bowling coach, however, Gambhir specifically pushed for the signing of Morkel since he had worked with the South African previously. Hence, Zaheer’s move to the Indian team never materialized.
Zaheer is one of the most prominent players to ever play for the Indian cricket team. The pacer represented India in over 300 international matches for India along with 100 appearances in the IPL, representing teams like Delhi Daredevils (DD), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI).
Apart from the mentor role, LSG will also be in the market in the IPL 2025 mega auction. There’s been a growing feeling about BCCI announcing the retention rules with up to six players rumoured to be retained along with RTM options.
